Make Today Your Day of Rest – No Matter What the Calendar Says

August 15th might be the official National Day of Rest, but here is the truth you can make any day your personal day of rest. In fact, you probably should. You do not have to wait for a national holiday to take a break, and you definitely do not need anyone’s permission.

Rest is not a reward for doing enough. Rest is necessary for you to function, stay healthy, and not turn into that grouchy person who glares at the cashier for bagging your bread under the milk.

In today’s world, rest does not always look like sitting under a tree in a field of daisies (although it could if that is your thing)! For many of us, it looks a little more modern and convenient. That might mean phone in hand, fuzzy socks on, and no one asking you, “What’s for dinner?” or “Is that report ready?” The truth is, rest is personal, and it is okay for your version of rest to look different from someone else’s.

Now let’s talk about five unconventional ways to rest, because lying in bed all day staring at the ceiling is not the only option.

  1. Binge-Watch or Binge-Read and Don’t Apologize- Pick a series on Netflix or Hulu, hit “play,” and let the episodes roll like you are being paid to watch them. My latest binge-worthy shows have been Bridgerton, 911, and Scandal. And let’s not forget about binge-reading. Give me a Sadeqa Johnson or a Kennedy Ryan novel any day. And here is the kicker, order in lunch or dinner so you do not even have to turn on the stove. This is a judgment-free zone.
  2. The Car Retreat- Sometimes, getting away from the noise in your house means creating a little oasis in your car. Park in a safe area, recline your seat, and enjoy your favorite podcast, audiobook, a devotional, some music, or even a guided meditation. It is amazing how peaceful a simple “driveway escape” can be when you are intentional about it.

    3. Spa-at-Home Day- Y’all know this is my mom’s favorite thing. She calls it a “wet bath” because she has the candles, bubbles, jets, music, and a glass of wine. She is the queen of self-care. You do not have to spend hundreds to feel pampered. A hot bath, some Epsom salt, soft music, and a little alone time can make you feel brand new.

  3. Silent Stroll with Vibrant Views- Keep your phone with you for safety, but put it on Do Not Disturb. No music, no podcasts, no talking. This is a walk to truly connect with your surroundings. You get a little exercise, fresh air, and mental clarity all in one. I like to wear my night driving glasses because they make colors more vibrant. You have never seen purple irises or green grass like this. It feels like walking in high definition.
  4. Creative Escape- Sometimes rest means letting your mind wander in a fun way. For me, I find it relaxing to pick out new plants. My sister finds it relaxing to replant them and keep them alive, because that part is not my ministry. You might enjoy baking, puzzles, painting, or rearranging your living room. The point is to do something that makes you happy without any pressure.

Why Rest Matters

When we push ourselves without a break, our bodies start sending warning signs. Stress can cause headaches, muscle tension, sleep problems, weakened immunity, and even affect your mood. In other words, too much stress turns you into the worst version of yourself. And trust me, no one needs that.

Rest is not lazy. It is an act of self-care, self-love, and sanity protection. So, whether it is August 15th or just a random Tuesday, give yourself permission to pause. Whether you are curled up with a good show, taking a car retreat, or strolling in those magic glasses, remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Now go put your feet up. Doctor’s orders well, Coach Angela’s orders.
