“You can choose to look the other way, but you can never say again, that you didn’t know…”
– William Wilberforce
This quote opens the story of “YELLOW WIFE” by Richmond native and celebrated author, Sadeqa Johnson, our premier guest for the 2nd annual LITTLE BLACK DRESS DAY AFFAIR.
She takes the reader through an unimaginable struggle of a woman determined to survive while protecting her family and her sanity. The story captures the theme of perseverance, a word that women, around the world, know and live, only too well. You will see your courage through her.
The story takes place at Lumpkin’s Jail, also known as “the Devil’s half acre” located on what is now 15th st in Shockoe Bottom and very near Main Street Station.
Meet Sadeqa and hear her responses as she is interviewed by Rita Ricks. It’s been said that Rita’s interviews are, focused and discerning, even as the flow is organic. Her questions bring out the essence of her guests.
Meet Bill Martin, Director of The Valentine Museum, as he shares a portion of the history of Lumpkin’s Jail and the gift that ultimately came from the carnage. History merges with fiction.
Meet Letricia Loftin Russel, the Mistress of Ceremony for the day. She is a professor at Maryland Theological Seminary. Her work has landed her several awards and honors, including Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary’s HOMETOWN HERO, and Virginia Union University’s Destiny Daughters.
